How are shadows formed?

Today we discussed how shadows are formed. We learnt that shadows are formed when an opaque objects blocks the light source. We went into the outside area and drew around our friends shadows. We discussed where the sun was in relation to our shadow.
Plants

Today we went into the school grounds and garden and observed all of the different plants that were growing. We discussed their names and their appearance. We then came back into the classroom and did observational drawings of the flowers.

Earth Hour

This week we have been finding out about Earth Hour during our whole school assemblies. We have learnt the importance of looking after our forests, plants and animals. We also found out the importance of looking after the environment by saving energy. We discussed turning lights and electronic equipment off when they are not being used. Class Three turned off all of the lights and the electronic equipment and went outside for an hour. We went on a hunt for the signs of spring then we worked as a class to play parachute games. We really enjoyed exploring our outdoor environment.

Science Show

This afternoon we went to the Townhall to see a science show by Stefan Gates. He is a well know Gastronaut, CBBC presenter and author. Stefan showed us lots of exciting and inspiring science experiments. Some of our teachers were chosen to take part in these experiments! The show was really informative and very engaging.

Parts of a flowering plant

This week during our learning challenge we have been learning to name the parts of a flowering plant and their functions. We drew a picture of a flowering plant and added labels. We then explained to our partner their different functions.
Some of us then added these to our drawings. We then used clay to make our own flower.

Science Week

To celebrate British Science Week Year 3 and Year 4 worked together to carry out three different science experiments. We had to follow the instructions to carry out the investigations and work in teams. We then discussed what we had found out and ways in which we could improve the investigations in the future.

Soil Investigation

Mrs Greenfinger had a gorgeous back garden but he front garden kept flooding. We tested to see which would be the best soil for the front garden. We discussed our predictions and decided to make it a fair test we would use the same amount of soil each time and the same amount of water. We tested sandy soil, clay soil and loam soil. We found out that the loam soil would be the best soil for Mrs Greenfinger’s garden.

Soil Profile

Today we learned what a profile is and the different layers of a soil profile. We the found out what each layer is made of. We then went in the outdoor area and made our own soil profiles.

Rocks

Today in science we enjoyed exploring different rocks and fossils. We discussed their appearance, shape and size. We also discussed the types of rocks that they were.
