Art & Design

Intent

At Escomb Primary School, art and design is a progressive development of skills, practised and embedded over time which stimulates creativity and imagination. It is designed to provide visual, tactile and sensory experiences in response to the world around us. Children will be given the opportunity to work with a variety of media, techniques and tools and is designed to work alongside other areas of the curriculum providing an enhanced and meaningful context for learning about great artists, craft makers and designers as well as developing an appreciation and understanding of the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Following the guidance of the National Curriculum, we aim for our children to:
• Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
• Know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Implementation

At Escomb, teachers and specialist teachers provide high quality art lessons in each year group, once a week, ensuring children are engaged, challenged and inspired. Each child in KS1 and KS2 is provided with their own sketchbooks to make initial sketches, develop skills, record ideas and develop creativity. Cross curricular links are promoted to allow a deepening understanding across the curriculum. Opportunities to visit local art galleries such as The Miners Art Gallery and The Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland are planned for as are visits from local visiting artists such as Daisy Community Arts.

Teachers follow a clear progression of skills provided through Focus Education which ensures children are challenged in line with their year group expectations and builds on prior knowledge.
In EYFS, children are encouraged to be creative and explore different materials in the indoor and outdoor environments, using techniques and tools which can be combined to create different effects and develop a range of skills.

Impact

At Escomb, children produce creative, independent work which shows exploration of their ideas and records their experiences. They are proficient in drawing, painting sculpture, 2D and 3D craft, art and design techniques. They are confident to explore, experiment and take risks and value the process that they have gone through to produce the finished product. They self and peer evaluate and appreciate the process of making improvements and developing their mastery of art and design techniques
